What Is Basal Energy Expenditure (BEE)?

How the Harris-Benedict Equation Works
Formula for Men:
BEE = 66.5 + (13.75 × weight in kg) + (5.003 × height in cm) − (6.775 × age in years)
Formula for Women:
BEE = 655.1 + (9.563 × weight in kg) + (1.850 × height in cm) − (4.676 × age in years)
Each variable reflects a key biometric input:
- Weight: Measured in kilograms (kg)
- Height: Measured in centimeters (cm)
- Age: In years
- Gender: Men and women have different coefficients due to metabolic differences
To get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), multiply your BEE by an activity level factor (ranging from 1.2 for sedentary individuals to 1.9 for highly active athletes).

Let’s take the example of a 30-year-old woman who weighs 60 kg and stands 165 cm tall.
BEE = 655.1 + (9.563 × 60) + (1.850 × 165) − (4.676 × 30) = 655.1 + 573.78 + 305.25 − 140.28 ≈ 1,393 kcal/day
This is her Basal Energy Expenditure. If she is lightly active (activity factor = 1.375), her TDEE would be:
TDEE = 1,393 × 1.375 = ~1,915 kcal/day
